Instead of the seven per cent shrink predicted in March, the New Zealand economy is down just three per cent on last year.
ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley says things are comparable to 2008.
He says the overall decline is something similar to that during the Global Financial Crisis, instead of being something materially worse.
