Claims Nanaia Mahuta's decision to appoint a commission to theTauranga City Council, was the right thing to do

Mahuta, who is the Local Government Minister, made the call yesterday, after significant governance issues among the council's elected members.

Local Government New Zealand president Stuart Crosby says it's tough for the council, but the problems it's experienced over the past 12 to 14 months need to be resolved.

He says Mahuta wasn't satisfied that the culture couldn't change, even if a crown manager was brought in.

The commission's term will begin early next year, and will end in October 2022.
