A BNZ survey of the past six months has found people are experiencing less anxiety and a little more happiness.
But 'sense of life worth and satisfaction' have declined, and 19 per cent of households have suffered income loss.
Economist Paul Conway says there's an increase of inequality.
Mr Conway says people on low incomes have been especially hard-hit by a deterioration in their financial situation.
