A reminder for people to not underestimate the weather forecast
A reminder for people to not underestimate the weather forecast
24 December 2020
A person was rescued today in Cook Strait by the Police Maritime Unit on board the Lady Elizabeth four, after being swept out to sea in a kayak, by wind and a strong current.
They had launched their kayak at Red Rocks and intended on fishing close to shore, but it capsized, and they were swept out to sea, before managing to get back on the kayak.
They lost their handheld radio during the capsize, there was no cell phone service, and their life jacket had deflated.
A mayday was broadcast, and they were pulled from the water at three this afternoon.
