A person was rescued off Wellington's Red Rocks yesterday afternoon, after being swept out to sea by wind and strong current.
They lost their handheld radio, there was no phone coverage, and their lifejacket deflated.
Luckily, someone on top of the hills realised they were in trouble and called police.
Senior Constable Kyle Smith says things could have ended up very differently.
He says it's important not to underestimate the weather forecast, check equipment is working, and let someone know your plans.
