30 December 2020
Six helicopters are working from the air, while around 40 fire fighters are on the ground.
Residents of 100 homes have been evacuated ... no properties at this stage have been damaged.
Crews were first called to the fire, that started at the Ahipara Gumfields Historic Reserve, shortly before 6 last night.
Far North mayor John Carter says the area is already being hit by drought - and the burnt area will take a long time to recover.
He says people shouldn't light fires in the open - because this is the consequence.
