Police say there will be repercussions to the chaos caused in Whangamata last night
1 January 2021
22 arrests were made after a crowd of drunken teenagers rioted through the streets of Whangamata.
Police had to use shields and batons to break up the swarm, while some of the teenagers scaled the roof of Blackies Cafe and hurled bottles down below.
Some arrested in connection to the violent disorder and breach of liquor laws will be making appearances in court at a later date.
Eastern Waikato Area Commander Inspector Dean Anderson says public liquor bans are there for a reason.
He says nobody is stopping anybody from drinking at home, but out in public police see what the result is.
