Dua Lipa has slammed the idea that she got to where she is today because of her looks

The ‘Levitating’ hitmaker has insisted it’s her “hardworking and driven” nature that has caused her music career to be so successful, as she hit out at those who believe being “pretty or beautiful” is the only reason for her fame

She told Rolling Stone magazine: “I’ve never really seen being pretty or beautiful as some kind of power. It’s never been something that I identify with … I feel like I was a little bit short-changed in a way [by the question] because I don’t feel like I’ve gotten to where I am because of that.

“I’m extremely hardworking and driven, and I feel like that’s the reason why I got to where I am, through my hard work and my drive, and I just wanted to make that clear because it has been playing on my mind.”

Dua’s comments come after she recently slammed sexism in the music industry, as she said female musicians face “so much more criticism” than their male counterparts.

She fumed last month: "As a female artist, especially in the pop genre, people immediately think you're manufactured … no one believes that you write these songs yourself.

"We're met with so much more criticism in terms of like what we wear, what we're doing, what the performance looks like, how we're dancing, how we're singing, if we're singing.”

The 25-year-old singer also made similar claims during a separate interview in November.

She said at the time: “That’s just being a woman in the industry. A lot of people see it, particularly in pop music, that you’re manufactured or whatever, so you have this underlying pressure or anxiety to constantly prove [yourself] to people, especially when you write your own lyrics.

“You have to work a little bit harder to be taken seriously.”
