Sacha Baron Cohen reprised the role of Borat to help "protect" democracy in the US

The 49-year-old comedy star returned to the character to make 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm', and Sacha says he was motivated to make the film for political reasons

He explained: "I suppose with this movie I felt I had to be able to look myself in the mirror on [the day after the US election] and say to myself, ‘I did everything I could to protect a political system that I value - democracy.'"

Sacha released the original Borat movie back in 2006, but he felt it was important to reprise the role of the fictitious Kazakhstani journalist.

The London-born star told The Sun newspaper: "The aim of the movie is to deliver a message. That’s the reason why Borat came out when it did.

"I thought the thing I can do to warn people is to use my funniest character, my most popular -character, to show what I thought the dangers of ¬voting for Donald Trump were. I felt democracy was at a very dangerous point."

After releasing the movie, Sacha is now determined to enjoy a well-earned rest.

He said: "There’s nothing up next. It’s been a busy year. Donald Trump is out and I want a break."

Sacha actually interviewed the billionaire businessman earlier in his career, when he was playing the part of Ali G.

And Trump previously slammed the comedy star, describing him as a "creep".

Trump said: "Years ago, you know, he tried to scam me. That’s a phony guy. And I don’t find him funny."

Reflecting on the prank interview - which happened more than 15 years ago - Trump added: "To me he was a creep."
