Ben Caldicott-Elwell died in December 2017 -- when his motorbike collided with a trailer north of Christchurch.
The Christchurch District Court heard the man towing the trailer, hit the motorcycle when he turned right without noticing his approach.
Caldicott-Elwell died at the scene, with speed, acceleration, and possible drug impairment possibly contributing.
Judge Brian Callaghan has ruled the consequences of a conviction outweigh the offending -- and granted the businessman permanent name suppression.
