In the capital... guns are being fired and waka are taking to the water to mark Waitangi Day

At midday, Waitangi Park will come alive with the best Maori performers, food and culture, including a hangi that can feed five-hundred.
Further north, Porirua will host one of the largest Waitangi Day events in the country with live music and waka tours on the harbour. .
At midday, the New Zealand Army will fire a 21-gun salute from Point Jerningham, marking the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth becoming our monarch.
Not everyone will be celebrating the day in the capital however, with a protest planned outside Te Papa this afternoon, calling for radical transformation to truly honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
