Dame Patsy Reddy addressed a crowd of about 400 guests at Government House in Wellington.
Dame Patsy says during her term, she's seen how the Treaty Settlement has taught many New Zealanders to consider and listen to new perspectives, and be more at ease with our differences.
She says in today's turbulent world where racism and xenophobic extremism seems to be on the rise, the capacity to recognise other points of view is a sign of a maturity we should all be proud of.
Dame Patsy's five year term ends in August.
