Residents of several Otago towns will be offered free fruit and vegetables -- as they await test results of their contaminated drinking water

There was sock and dismay after it was revealed Waikouaiti and Karitane's water supply contains 40 times the acceptable limit of lead.

Blood tests are being offered to locals -- and from Tuesday, free produce for those whose homegrown crops are irrigated with the compromised water.

The latest round of water test results is due on Tuesday.

The 'no drink' water notice for Waikouaiti and Karitane remains in place.

The source of the contamination is still unknown.
