Kiwirail reports the driver misjudged the height of a rail bridge off State Highway One, near Taihape.
The line had to be closed for 24 hours -- forcing the cancellation of 11 trains -- and disrupting the national freight network.
Chief Operating Officer Todd Moyle says they'll now have to come back and make permanent repairs.
He says they're doing a final design - but that can take weeks - and it has big implications on other road users.
