The Ministry of Primary Industries is chipping in eight million bucks towards a 20 million dollar plan - to extract edible protein from New Zealand's green leafy crops.
The Government's partnering with Leaft Foods on a five-year programme - in a bid to put us on the map as a leading producer of leaf protein concentrate.
Protein will be manufactured as gels and powders to be used in foods - as well as an animal feed optimised for livestock nutrition.
The eight million dollars is coming from the Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund.
