The world number one is nine shots off the pace being set by England's Justin Rose after the first round of the 85th Masters.
Johnson double bogeyed the last to card a two over 74, Rose fired a breathtaking seven under 65.
Johnson says conditions were vastly different than when he won in November where 53 players were under par after round one, today there were 12.
Justin Rose has a four shot lead with American Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama tied for second on three under par.
