The approach to funding HIV prevention work in New Zealand might have to change in the future

The approach to funding HIV prevention work in New Zealand might have to change in the future

Otago University AIDS Epidemiology Group figures show 95 people were diagnosed for the first time in New Zealand, last year - the lowest figure since the early 2000s.

Twenty-six people were infected heterosexually ... about half at late stages of infection.

AIDS Foundation chief executive Jason Myers says a lot of current government funding is for work targeting transmission in gay and bisexual men.

He says if they get the job done that they want - which is ending transmission between men who have sex with men in New Zealand - what does that mean for heterosexual New Zealanders.
