That's the breakthrough finding from a sociology study conducted by Auckland University and Otago University researchers.
It warns even mild stress on the mother can have life-long consequences for the child's journey through school - and society.
Doctor Felicia Low says impacted neurodevelopment is linked to antisocial behaviour, school failure and poor relationships.
The authors suggest a formal, structured process for women to be routinely screened for depression during pregnancy.
