A warning young teens shouldn't be left to get the Covid-19 vaccine last

A warning young teens shouldn't be left to get the Covid-19 vaccine last

Medsafe has approved administering the jab to 12 to 15-year-olds.

Cabinet will now review Ministry of Health advice on rolling out doses to the age group, and is set to announce a decision this month.

Following the Government's current aged-based sequencing framework - this new cohort would likely be last in line to be immunised.

But Auckland University medical Professor Des Gorman says we need a more nuanced approach than the oldest to youngest system.

He says young people may not get as sick as older people - but are more socially mobile and engaged - acting as a vector for disease spread.
