Crews are out assessing the damage following heavy swells along Wellington's south coast
30 June 2021
Waves peaked at 6.5 metres shortly after high tide at nine last night.
And waves of up to 5.5 metres are expected until the next high tide at 9.30 this morning.
Wellington Region Emergency Management Office spokesman Jeremy Holmes says that's still large enough to do damage, and the threat isn't over yet.
Officials are currently meeting to assess the situation.
Roading crews are out clearing debris and checking the damage sustained overnight - they say waves have crashed over at Breaker Bay, Owhiro Bay and Moa Point.
Holmes says there doesn't appear to be much structural damage.
People should still keep clear of the south coast, Wairarapa coast, and Wellington Harbour around Petone and Eastbourne.
