League's World Cup has been postponed until next year after tournament organisers bowed to pressure from Australia and New Zealand, who had withdrawn from this year's scheduled edition

Officials had been adamant it was this year or never for the tournament in England but admitted the failure to secure the release of up to 400 NRL players, match officials and staff members forced their hand.

The decision means the tournament will now clash with football's World Cup, creating a battle for publicity.
