Unintentional injuries to children are costing almost 400-million dollars every year

Unintentional injuries to children are costing almost 400-million dollars every year

A study published in today's New Zealand Medical Journal has found annually, one in four children suffer an injury requiring medical help or ACC.

The author says these numbers carry consequences and cost to society - as well as immeasurable psychology impacts on the kids involved.

Starship paediatric emergency medicine specialist Mike Shepherd says it reinforces concerns our system isn't working to prevent injuries.

He says we need to spend more on injury prevention and work in partnership with whanau to stop children getting hurt.
