The person turned up at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital with a non-covid related issue yesterday - but was tested and left the hospital before the positive result came through.
No hospital staff have been stood down, but some police officers have been.
District commander Superintendent Jill Rogers say police were told about the situation last night.
She says seven officers dealt with the individual and another family member on Wednesday morning, before the hospital visit on Thursday.
They've been stood down as a precaution.
The officers are all from Auckland's Counties-Manukau area.
