New Stats NZ figures show food rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2 percent last month -- the fifth consecutive monthly increase.
Meat, poultry, and fish went up 1.3 percent, due an 11-percent rise in the price of roasting pork, and rising costs for lamb chops, sausages, and porterhouse and sirloin steak.
Ready-to-eat foods and restaurant meals got more expensive, in the parts of the country allowed to buy them.
But, the rising prices were partly offset by a drop in the cost of chicken pieces.
