BNZ data shows consumer card spending suffered an early trough in Level 4, but is now 14 per cent below pre -Delta lockdown levels.
Chief economist Paul Conway says the lesser hit this time reflects less time with all of the country at level four, greater confidence that employment will hold up and more use of digital tools.
He says it's encouraging to see that New Zealanders are using digital tools more and more to insulate themselves from the impact of lockdown.
