Last year's Labour Weekend road toll was eight.
Superintendent Steve Greally says any number of deaths is too many but they don't want the number of deaths or injuries to get any higher.
He says while investigators work to understand how the crashes occurred, preliminary information tells them alcohol, speed, lack of seatbelts, distractions and poor decisions are likely to feature.
The Labour Weekend holiday road toll period ends at 6am tomorrow.
