Pfizer has reported its experimental antiviral pill cuts rates of hospitalisation and death by nearly 90 percent in high-risk adults.
The results have prompted Pfizer to stop the trial, and prepare to make its case to the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency authorisation.
Baker say the new drug is a protease inhibitor - which is a quite an old category of drugs, being re-purposed for this virus.
He says the almost 90 percent rate is sensational, and while it needs to be rolled out in larger populations, the study did include people with serious other illnesses.
