Stats NZ figures show there were fewer than eight-thousand departures in September -- a low not seen since September 1961.
There were just over eight-thousand arrivals -- the lowest number since May last year.
Meanwhile, provisional net migration dropped to just 800 people in the year to September -- the lowest year since 2012.
That's well down on the average net gain of 56-thousand over the previous seven years to September.
