A health warning has been issued for areas around Glentunnel's Waikirikiri River.
Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton says the algae appear as dark brown-to-black mats and can be toxic to people and animals.
She says people and pets should stay out of the waterways until the warning's lifted.
Environment Canterbury is monitoring the sites and will advise the public of any changes.
