The Herald reveals the former Highlanders and Blues player had fallen into what he describes as an exhaustive, frightening state from his latest head knock.
After a year of ongoing symptoms, the 26-year-old felt he had no other choice.
Hunt steps away with a strong message - don't rush back from concussion until symptoms have fully cleared.
He is the second former All Blacks to suddenly retire due to medical reasons in the last 24 hours, with former Chiefs hooker Nathan Harris hanging up the boots due to ongoing discomfort from an ankle injury yesterday.
