Three sunscreens have failed to meet the levels of protection they claim, in Consumer New Zealand's first round of sunscreen test results

Three sunscreens have failed to meet the levels of protection they claim, in Consumer New Zealand's first round of sunscreen test results

They are Natural Instinct Invisible Natural Sunscreen SPF 30, Sukin Suncare Sheer Touch Facial Sunscreen Untinted SPF30 and Banana Boat Daily Protect Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 plus.

Six sunscreens met their SPF label claim and broad-spectrum protection requirements.

Consumer Research Writer Belinda Castles says it highlights the need for regulation.

She says sunscreens are classified as cosmetic, and it's voluntary to meet Australia New Zealand standards so products that haven't undergone performance testing can still be sold.
