Coach Tommy Pyatt is thrilled with the continued improvement of Kiwi free skier Nico Porteous

Coach Tommy Pyatt is thrilled with the continued improvement of Kiwi free skier Nico Porteous

The reigning world and X Games champion has topped the qualifiers ahead of Saturday's final at the opening World Cup of the season in Colorado.

Pyatt says Porteous has had a hard training season and everyone is trying to catch him.

In a good day for New Zealand, Miguel Porteous, Ben Harrington and Gustav Legnavsky all qualified quota spots for February's Winter Olympics.
