Trent Boult has hit Ed Nuttall for a woodchopping six from the last ball to help Northern Districts to a one-wicket victory over Canterbury chasing 108 at Mt Maunganui in the Super Smash.

The win takes ND to the top of the table on 14 points from five matches - Canterbury are third on eight from four.

Boult accepts there were no airs nor graces to his heave over cow corner, on Spark Sport.

Boult had earlier secured two wickets for 21 from three overs as he builds to a test return at the venue on New Year's Day against Bangladesh.
