An abnormally high number of kaki chicks to have hatched over Christmas

18 shucked their eggs in the Twizel brooding facility between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
The critically endangered black stilts are one of the world's rarest wading birds.
DOC Kaki Project Lead Liz Brown says over the past 10 years, an average one chick has hatched on Christmas Day.
She says it's the perfect Christmas gift for the hard-working team at the brooding facility, which is staffed 365 days of the year.
