Pakistan restricted South Africa to 223 for nine, then seemed on course for victory... before being bowled out for 217, with a ball to spare.
Three wickets fell in the final six balls.
South Africa are now third in the group stage standings ... level on points with top-placed Australia and second-placed New Zealand.
