Batting first the hosts posted 228, bowled out with 13 balls remaining - captain Sophie Devine made 93 off 101 balls.
The White Ferns struggled to gain momentum with the ball until the 36th over when Melie Kerr dismissed Proteas opener Laura Wolvaardt for 67 - she finished with figures of three for 50.
Devine's tried to look on the bright side after losing with three balls to spare.
