Daylight has brought confirmation that 31 have died in the latest stranding on the north-western tip of the South Island.
Project Jonah says 28 whales were already dead when volunteers arrived last night - with another three dying overnight.
DOC staff and Project Jonah volunteers are assessing whether the remaining five can be safely re-floated.
