A Tauranga man has been slapped with more than five-thousand dollars in fines for trying to smuggle in exotic plants

Scott Peters has been sentenced in the Auckland District Court - on one charge of breaching the Biosecurity Act.

The Ministry for Primary Industries cottoned on to the 33-year-old's illegal activity when he tried to import plant bulbs from India in 2019.

An investigation led to MPI intercepting six attempts at bringing in plants at the border - including from Thailand and the UK.
