A father and son have been found not guilty on charges of assaulting and wounding a teen who attempted to burgle their Piopio property for the fourth time.
AUT criminal law and justice professor Warren Brookbanks says it won't create a precedent - because self defence is judged on a case by case basis.
He says if the jury was rural, the members may have had sympathy for the defendants.
Brookbanks says rural people are more isolated and have to wait longer to get help in emergencies.
