Stats NZ says food prices increased by more than six percent between April 2021 and 2022.
Grocery food was the largest contributor, with top dollar being paid for cheddar cheese, milk and eggs.
Some individual categories rose more - such as fruit and vegetables, which surged more than nine percent during the same period.
Countdown and Foodstuffs have just announced price freezes and discounts on staples - in a bid to ease rising costs for shoppers.
