The Canterbury DHB still has the highest number of new cases of any region in the country, with 594 reported yesterday.
CDHB's CEO Peter Bramley says the complexity of illness in people going to the Emergency Department is on the rise.
He says they're now grappling with influenza and other ailments - making winter particularly difficult.
Over 24 hours from midnight Friday to Saturday, 38 per cent of the 306 people presenting to Christchurch Hospital had to be admitted to hospital.
