A 35-year-old man fled police after a statue of Lord Ernest Rutherford was stolen in Brightwater on Friday.
He was brought to justice by Constable Jamie White - who didn't let a bit of water stop him getting his man, and followed him into the Wai-iti River.
No one was injured and the pair made it safely back to shore.
The man is due to appear in the Nelson District Court today, charged with theft and wilful damage.
