Rory McIlroy's crediting his mental resilience for a bogey free five-under-par 65 opening round at the US Open golf major in North Carolina

The 2011 champion has a share of the one-shot lead, alongside American Patrick Cantlay.

McIlroy says he had to persevere after a run of pars on the back nine.

World number one Scottie Scheffler - playing alongside McIlroy - carded a one over par 71 to be in a tied for 35th.

Ryan Fox is a further two shots back on three over.
