Whangarei Boys' High School has pleaded guilty to health and safety failures - after a student's death at the local Abbey Caves last year

Fifteen-year-old Karnin Petera died on a school trip there last May.

His death, during heavy rain, rocked the school and the wider Whangarei community.

WorkSafe charged the school board with two counts of exposing people to the risk of harm or death.

The school's pleaded guilty to both charges.

The judge set a sentencing date of September 27.
