Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones is accusing New Zealand's big power companies of sitting on their hands with an energy crisis looming

Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones is accusing New Zealand's big power companies of sitting on their hands with an energy crisis looming

Four timber mills are proposing closures or downsizing, after a fivefold increase to wholesale prices over the past year.

Meridian Energy says the industry is taking steps to maintain security of supply, but low lake levels, acute gas shortages and periods of low wind are all putting pressure on prices.

Mr Jones says these energy security risks are not new.

He says they've known for over six years and haven't done anything to prevent this.
