KiwiRail's been fined more than 400-thousand dollars over health and safety breaches, after the Interislander's Kaitaki lost power and drifted near Wellington.

The District Court yesterday heard from people who were convinced they were going to drown - with some having panic attacks during the mayday call.

Andrew says he was on the ferry with his wife, and a pastor was praying with a number of people on board - while others were throwing up.

He says when you saw tug boats heading in between the waves, you realised how bad it was.
