A police officer who used excessive force against a man who pulled 'the finger' - remains a member of New Zealand Police

A police officer who used excessive force against a man who pulled 'the finger' - remains a member of New Zealand Police

The man and his friend were arrested in central Auckland for disorderly behaviour - after making the gesture at a police van driving past in May 2022.

The man complained to the Independent Police Conduct Authority after the pair received warnings.

CCTV footage revealed an officer had pushed him - and pleaded guilty to assault before being discharged.

Police agree with the IPCA the two men shouldn't have been arrested or given warnings - and these have been removed from the database.
