An Auckland community has convinced their local board to extend the lease of a Newmarket pool

An Auckland community has convinced their local board to extend the lease of a Newmarket pool

The Olympic Pool and Fitness Centre had been deemed earthquake-prone and in need of structural improvements.

The Waitemata Local Board ignored recommendations from an Auckland Council report and extended the lease until 2034.

Board Chair Genevieve Sage says many members of the board received dozens of emails in support of the pool.

She says a decade-long lease extension was the right thing to do for a well-cherished facility.
