A university lecturer says a concerning level of students are entering tertiary study illiterate

Canterbury University Associate Professor Mike Grimshaw says people are attending university without good reason.

He says society has manufactured a problem for the institutes, who must now face underachieving students who don't attend lectures.

Grimshaw says its becoming a global trend, which brings into question the overall education system.
