A company has been ordered to pay almost half a million dollars, after a man was fatally crushed by nine tonnes of steel in Christchurch

A company has been ordered to pay almost half a million dollars, after a man was fatally crushed by nine tonnes of steel in Christchurch

The man was sweeping underneath shelving at United Steel in Wigram when it collapsed in November 2020.

WorkSafe area investigation manager Steve Kelly says an investigation has found glaring safety gaps in the company's practices, including the racking not being cross-braced or bolted to the floor for stability.

He says this is a tragic incident that should never have occurred, if the company had managed its risks.
